21: digital translation portfolio

´21´ is a practice and task-oriented translation education project established with support from the Taalunie (Language Union). The aim of the project is to offer beginning translators (for example – but not exclusively – students of Dutch outside the language area) a platform on which they can present their work to the outside world. The website that forms the core of the project can be found here.

An important precondition for the existence of a translation platform is the availability of texts to translate. For practical reasons, a single group of students is responsible for collecting these texts, under the supervision of a teacher.

The students maintain contact (in Dutch or another language they master) with writers and other interested parties, maintain websites and social media and assess texts offered or recruited for translation. They do this in a class that is not only about translation itself, but also teaches students theoretical knowledge and practical skills that may prove useful when they later work as translators or editors in the literary field or elsewhere.

It is intended that this editorial staff will change ‘place of employment’ every few years. Project ’21’ started in the academic year 2019/2020 in Prague and will be managed from October 2021 in Bratislava. Another changing of the guard is planned for 2023.

In addition to the portal, a printed selection of translated texts with illustrations was also published, entirely composed and edited by students and coordinated by the teacher.

What does 21 mean?

21 stands for maturity, two and one, a translator and an author, who together create one new work. Originally, there were 21 original texts in Dutch on the website, but now there are a few more. 21 is also not an acronym, so it remains the same in all languages.
